Data Tools for Supporting Students in Finding the Best Fit Two-to Four-Year Colleges or Universities
While 55% of job vacancies in San Diego County require an associate degree or higher, only 45% of students who are African-American or Hispanic enroll in postsecondary education, and of those that enroll in local two year colleges, about 10% of African-American students complete an AA degree or transfer. For Hispanic students, the rate is higher at 26%. One of the reasons rates are so low involves the matching between the students’ background and skills and the higher education institutions. Nearly 50% of the highest performing African-American and Hispanic students are enrolled in nonselective institutions. Students often lack the necessary information to make informed decisions about where to apply and attend college after high school.

In this presentation, we will present a number of different data tools and resources that counselors can use to help match students to the schools that meet their needs and present the best chances of success. These tools include Student Union, College Raptor, Alliance College Ready Public Schools Power 150 List, and more. Having this information at your fingertips and teaching students how to use this data can potentially increase student persistence and completion rates by empowering them to find and attend a school that best fits their unique background.

How Migrant Education Supports Counselors In Reaching Your District Migrant Students
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) is a federally funded program designed to support high quality and comprehensive educational programs for approximately 5,000 migrant children in San Diego and Orange Counties to help reduce the educational disruption and other problems that result from repeated moves.
Families work in the agricultural and/or fisheries industries and will often move across districts and state lines several times within a 12-36 month-period of time, following the various crops by season. Poverty, low wages, deplorable and unsafe living/working conditions, interrupted schooling, lack of social mobility and lack of educational opportunities still plague migrant families. Migrant farmworkers still toil long hours in the fields and most live well below the poverty level. It is not unusual for children to also work in the fields, alongside their families, when they're not in school and even during the school year. Come find out if you have migrant students in your district & how Migrant Ed can be your hands in feet in reaching migrant students in your caseload. This session will be a panel discussion.

Addressing the Adverse Childhood Experiences of Your Students: Building Resiliency to Combat Toxic Stress
Toxic stress stemming from adverse experiences is a major public health concern that has both immediate and long-term impacts on health and well-being. Students dealing with these adverse childhood experiences often do so with little or no support. But research shows that resiliency can be nurtured in naturally occurring environments that focus on protective factors. This presentation highlights two projects that can easily be incorporated into school environments to promote resilience. Utilizing many existing school resources, these programs identify the means by which to develop resiliency skills among students of all ethnic and socioeconomic strata to promote health and well-being.

Ikigai - Helping Students Find Their Purpose
We all want students to find fulfilling careers that pay a living wage, and there are a number of things we can do to prepare them for this throughout their educational journey. In this session, we will discuss strategies to help students find what they like, what they are good at, what the world needs, and what they can get paid for so students are empowered to make informed decisions about their future. These approaches can be applied at the classroom, district, or regional level, as we work together to help all students discover and pursue their ikigai, or purpose.
